Waves in Capbreton season by season

Understanding Capbreton's waves, the submarine canyon effect and the best conditions for surfing year-round.

The Gouf de Capbreton: unique waves in Europe

The Gouf de Capbreton is a submarine canyon that plunges over 3,000 metres deep just a few hundred metres from shore. It is one of the most remarkable geological formations on the European Atlantic coast.

Its influence on Capbreton's waves is direct: Atlantic swell passing over this abyss loses some of its energy. Waves reaching Capbreton's beaches are therefore less powerful and less hollow than those at Hossegor or Seignosse, where the continental shelf rises gradually and amplifies the swell.

The result: Capbreton offers gentler, longer and more consistent waves. A considerable advantage for learning to surf and progressing as an intermediate surfer.

Waves by season

March — May

Spring

The last winter swells meet the first mild days. Average size 1 to 2 m, sometimes bigger in March. Water still cool (12-15°C), 4/3 wetsuit needed. Few people in the water on weekdays.

Intermediate Advanced

June — September

Summer

The ideal season to start. Moderate swell of 0.5 to 1.5 m, water at 20-23°C (shorty or rash vest). Regular waves at Santocha, perfect for group lessons. Onshore thermal wind in the afternoon.

Beginner Intermediate

September — November

Autumn

The best season for surfing in Capbreton. The first Atlantic swells arrive with 1.5 to 2.5 m well-shaped waves. Wind often offshore (east), water still warm in September (19-21°C). Memorable sessions guaranteed.

Intermediate Advanced

December — February

Winter

Powerful swells of 2 to 3+ metres, consistent thanks to Atlantic storms. Cold water (10-13°C), 5/4 wetsuit + gloves + boots. The most exposed spots (La Piste) offer impressive waves. For experienced surfers only.

Ideal conditions for surfing

Swell

West to north-west, period 10-14s. Long north-west swells produce the best waves.

Wind

East to south-east (offshore) or no wind. Offshore smooths the waves and hollows them at the right moment.

Tide

Mid-rising to mid-falling. Low tides with high coefficients create currents. Avoid full high tide.

Time of day

Early morning or late afternoon. Onshore thermal wind rises around 11am in summer and chops the surface.

Frequently asked questions about waves in Capbreton

Why are Capbreton waves different from Hossegor?

The Gouf de Capbreton, a submarine canyon over 3,000 metres deep, changes how swell propagates. It reduces wave power on Capbreton's southern beaches (Santocha, VVF), while at Hossegor waves arrive unobstructed and break with more force on steep sandbars.

What is the best season to surf in Capbreton?

Each season has its strengths. Summer (June-September) offers regular and accessible waves, perfect for beginners. Autumn (September-November) is the best season for experienced surfers, with powerful swells and often offshore winds. Spring offers a good compromise.

What wave sizes can you find in Capbreton?

In summer, waves measure between 0.5 and 1.5 metres. In spring and autumn, they can reach 1 to 2.5 metres. In winter, swells regularly exceed 2 metres, with 3-metre-plus days on the most exposed spots like La Piste.

What is the best time of day to surf in Capbreton?

Early morning (before 10am) generally offers the best conditions: light or offshore wind, fewer people in the water. In summer, onshore thermals often rise late morning. Evening at sunset is also a good window when the wind drops.
